Lead Trails Guide – Walking Safari Operator – Northern Kruger National Park
Are you at one with nature’s sounds and smells, happy to be isolated in the bush creating amazing guest experiences on foot?
Our client, a walking safari tour operator in the northern part of Kruger National Park is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced FGASA Qualified Trails Guide to join their team.
As an integral member of their organization, you will be responsible for leading and guiding wildlife enthusiasts on immersive and educational bushwalking safaris within designated areas. This is a unique opportunity to showcase your expertise, passion for conservation, and love for the African wilderness.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Guiding and Safety: Lead guests on bushwalking safaris, ensuring their safety while providing a captivating and informative wildlife experience. Conduct pre-trip safety briefings and ensure compliance with all safety protocols during excursions.
Interpretation and Education: Provide expert knowledge and interpretation of the surrounding ecosystem, including flora, fauna, and animal behaviour. Educate guests about conservation principles, wildlife management, and sustainable practices to promote environmental awareness.
Wildlife Tracking: Utilize your tracking skills to locate and observe a variety of African wildlife species. Share insights on animal behaviour, habitat, and ecological interdependencies, fostering a deeper understanding of the African bush.
Guest Engagement: Create a welcoming and engaging environment, cultivating a memorable experience for guests. Encourage questions, facilitate discussions, and adapt your approach to cater to diverse groups with varying levels of interest and knowledge.
Environmental Stewardship: Promote conservation efforts and responsible tourism practices, emphasizing the importance of protecting natural resources and minimizing human impact on the environment.
Guest Safety and Emergency Response: Possess a thorough understanding of emergency procedures and first aid. Be prepared to handle any potential risks or incidents that may arise during excursions, ensuring the safety and well-being of guests.
Equipment and Logistics: Maintain and ensure the functionality of the equipment used during bushwalking safaris, including but not limited to radios, binoculars, and first aid kits. Coordinate with the camp/lodge management team to ensure seamless logistics for each excursion.
Professional Development: Stay up to date with industry trends, conservation practices, and emerging research to continuously enhance your skills and knowledge. Actively participate in ongoing training programs and share new insights with colleagues.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum 2 years relevant experience.
The FGASA Professional Field Guide Certificate
Have a valid Level 2 Wilderness Medicine Certificate
Comply to all legal requirements (CATHSSETA & NDT) as well as all FGASA requirements
The FGASA Professional Trails Guide Certificate
Have a valid FGASA Advanced Rifle Handling certification
Tracker Level III Certificate
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage and connect with guests from diverse backgrounds.
High level of physical fitness and stamina to lead walking safaris in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating strong leadership skills when required.
BENEFITS:
Basic single accommodation in the staff village – room with en-suite bathroom.
When on trail, the guide will be accommodated in a dome tent at the trails camp.
Uniforms and meals are supplied
Leave cycle can either be 3 weeks on-one week off or six weeks on-two weeks off
Optional life and disability plus retirement annuity plan that the employer and employee contribute to 50/50 at 12% of salary
