House Manager / Au Pair / Butler Position for a Busy Home and Business Residence based in Bishopscourt – Cape Town

(Please note that this position is not available to someone that only has Au pair experience – 5-star guest house or hotel experience is an advantage)

We are searching for mature, confident, enthusiastic House and Au pair manager to join an amazing team of staff to manage home and family estate.
Your role would be to take over the day-to-day management and running of the lives our young family of 3.
You will be charged with household upkeep, supervision of existing staff, and hosting of guests.
You will manage budgeting, domestic staff, and ensuring the pristine maintenance and running of the household to a guest house standard.
We need an honest, fastidious and trustworthy individual; someone who is dynamic in leadership yet adaptable; a quick thinker who knows how to defuse panic, have a sunny and positive outlook, and of course, have the right experience for the job, then apply.

HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overseeing correct layout, change-over and upkeep of table service for breakfast, lunch and evening meals; in preparing dining tables in accordance to the theme of the reception (formal, informal, buffet, family or silver service)
Maintaining and cleaning valuable silverware, fine porcelain and crystalware
Managing and maintaining employer’s wardrobe (ensuing timely washing, pressing, arranging and folding;
and packing)
Preparing travel plans, itinerary and luggage
Preparing holiday homes for arrival of family
Performing all duties and obligations with decorum, tact and unwavering professionalism
Management and/or cleaning of artworks, antiques and silverware
Managing stock and supply operation in particular of high value commodities such as fine wines, cigars, books and cars
General upkeep and tidiness of living and sitting rooms
Managing and supervising the creation of upkeep of floral displays throughout the home
Manage and communication of the household schedules, payroll and home administration happens timeously
Complete and total household schedule management
Management of household staff compliment, terms of scheduling, leave appointments, duties and
disciplinaries, Supervise: 2 cleaners, 1-2 gardeners.
Make sure all their duties are done
Understanding, promoting and defending the household protocols among staff and guests
Any training of household staff
Maintaining inventories of supplies and valuables
Inviting and welcoming guests, with an aptitude for guest relations
Manage household budget, plan meals and purchasing; and review with the principle as when required, on a weekly basis
Preparation of meals of a high standard as when required, based on the weekly menu
Serving food and beverage, ensuring proper service at all times in-relation to the reception theme and ambiance
Organising social events, hosting and arranging specific details for reception Taking telephone calls and the proper handling of correspondence
Financial and completed duties reporting on a daily, weekly and monthly basis
Management of third party suppliers and vendors
Managing staff doing laundry and ironing as per the daily schedule and requirements
Management of garden schedule in consultation of the employer and gardeners in terms of :
o Daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal schedule
o Stock, supplies and equipment and maintenance thereof
The family has strict requirements on how certain tasks and processes are managed and run timeously and efficiently within the household, proper training will be provided however the applicant must be one of being able to strictly stay within the requirements and follow through with expectations
Maintain a neat, presentable dress code at all times
Solve routine challenges that occur on the job
Ensure the day-to-day operations (ie the cleaning and completion of household chores) of the home runs smoothly, in accordance to family’s preferences
Checking the quality of stock on arrival
Good Relationship skills with people and suppliers needed
Assist to plan, organise and co-ordinate family events (limited)
Identify, schedule and supervise home maintenance
Accompany and assist the family when travelling either in South Africa or Abroad; including relevant and associated duties and admin

AU-PAIR DUTIES:

Be kind, gentle and caring in child care duties
Take and Collect child from school, extracurricular activities and appointments as and when required
Provide necessary care and comfort should child fall ill
Must be water safe and have first aid training
Be available to assist with school projects, reading etc during homework time
Run errands, pack school bags, lunch bags and sports equipment
Doing general clothing shopping when required
Covering of school books, buying birthday gifts
Organising cupboards and tidy rooms and play areas

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Due to the nature of the job, applicants to be preferably single with no dependents
The successful candidate will be required to be available hours at times when the parents are away on business or overseas – this will be paid as an extra over salary
Matriculate certification with a University exemption
An indication of relevant learning or training in hospitality/catering – to a minimum 3 years experience in the
hospitality industry; OR Experience in similar position within a private family residence with contactable references
Knowledge about wine, cooking and dining protocols
Exposure to childcare responsibilities a plus
Computer literate
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
Have a working knowledge of health and safety protocols as relates to a family home
Proficiency in planning, purchasing and maintaining supplies (stock management) and inventories
Impeccable organizational and planning skills with exceptional attention to detail
The ability to delegate activities and manage others
Strong staff management skills Respected by the other staff is vital and confident to direct other staff and liaise with the team in the Private
Office
Must have a valid passport in case needed to travel abroad
Must work in collaboration with the parents PA at their business when needed
Recent Character Contactable references a requisite
Valid Co-Vid vaccinations a requisite
TB, Police (SAPS) clearance and Credit checks to be done on successful candidates
Candidates should have own roadworthy vehicle and a valid and current SA drivers licence

WORKING HOURS

Two shift times for the weekly roster with off days
Monday – Friday : Shift work (08h00 – 18h00 x 3 days and 12:00 – 20h00 x 2 days)
Alternate Saturdays : 13h00 – 22h00.
Ad-hoc Public holiday work from time to time, dependent on employers needs/family functions and will be pre-arranged
Must be fluent in reading and writing in English – it is the main language of the household but advantageous to have know one other African language
Able to step in, be practical and hands-on; and assist should a staff member not be available
