General Manager – Luxury Lodge – Botswana

Our client, a prestigious 5-star safari lodge located in a remote and breathtaking setting, is seeking an experienced and highly regarded General Manager. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in independently managing luxury properties, with a strong understanding of lodge operations, finance, and staff management. A passion for hospitality, sustainability, conservation, and community development is essential.

Description:

We are looking for a General Manager to lead our client’s prestigious 5-star lodge in a remote location. The role demands a dynamic individual with extensive experience in hospitality management, a deep understanding of lodge operations, and a commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with staff, guests, governmental departments, community, and industry stakeholders.
  • Work with foundations on community development initiatives.
  • Drive business efficiencies through cost control, local produce sourcing, and maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Develop and enhance HR structures, ensuring adherence and understanding.
  • Innovate guest experiences across all touchpoints, including lodge, food, and game experiences.
  • Engage with local culture and work styles, ensuring alignment with organizational expectations.
  • Regularly assess and ensure the functionality and efficiency of all operational equipment and facilities.
  • Analyze and improve the lodge’s sustainability efforts, including reducing the carbon footprint.
  • Provide financial oversight, including budgeting and forecasting, adapting to changing business environments.
  • Develop and implement training programs to uphold service standards.
  • Introduce new concepts and creative ideas, staying abreast of service delivery trends.
  • Ensure health and safety standards are met and maintained.
  • Foster a superior workforce, including planning staffing levels, recruiting, and developing staff.
  • Empower and mentor employees, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Maintain transparent communication and effective performance management.

Outputs:

  • Effective management and elevation of service standards at the lodge.
  • Budget creation and management, including CAPEX planning.
  • Oversee daily lodge operations and back-of-house management.
  • Develop and implement strategies for guest delight, staff welfare, health and safety, and training.
  • Maintain human resources management, ensuring compliance with labor relations and leave policies.
  • Collaborate with the executive chef to align menus with quality standards and budget constraints.
  • Assess, plan, and manage repairs and maintenance of all buildings and equipment.
  • Ensure lodge and service standards are met at all times.
  • Host VIP guests, agents, and media groups.

Requirements:

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a Lodge Manager or General Manager in a 5-star property.
  • Qualification in Hospitality Management.
  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven track record in managing human resources and financial oversight.
  • Passion for sustainability and community development.
  • High energy levels and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Excel and Access.

  • Energetic, proactive person with well-developed concept of the importance of providing a world-class guest experience and the ability to provide that experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a department and lodge staff members.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic economics, budgeting, and accounting principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a knowledgeable resource to the organization’s management team that provides leadership and direction.
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Must include knowledge of Excel and skills in Access.
  • General knowledge of various employment laws and practices and employee relations.
  • Evidence of the ability to practice a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational management skills.
  • Education and Experience Required of the Manager.
  • A minimum of three years of responsible leadership experiences in management or supervisory positions.
  • Specialized training in managing human resources, preferred.
  • Previous Work Experience Required:
  • Experience in the service industry, especially in dealing with guests and staff.
  • Previous experience in running a five-star operation as Lodge Manager or GM for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Qualification in Hospitality Management a must.
