Assistant Sommelier – Esteemed Restaurant – Stellenbosch
My client seeks a passionate and knowledgeable Assistant Sommelier to join their esteemed restaurant team. This role involves recommending wine pairings to enhance the dining experience, maintaining the wine list, and ensuring exceptional service standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in wine education and a dedication to guest satisfaction.
Description:
As an Assistant Sommelier, you will play a crucial role in creating a memorable dining experience by suggesting suitable wines to pair with dishes on our menu. Your responsibilities will include training staff, maintaining the wine list, managing stock, and conducting monthly inventory checks. You will also meet with suppliers to expand our wine portfolio and ensure the wine service area is prepared for each service. This role demands a deep passion for wine, excellent guest service skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with all restaurant departments.
Responsibilities:
- Train restaurant staff on wine knowledge and service.
- Ensure the correct presentation and temperature of all drinks.
- Update the wine list as necessary.
- Place orders for wines and other beverages.
- Meet with suppliers to discover new and exciting wines.
- Set up and prepare the wine service area for service.
- Maintain sufficient stock and equipment levels.
- Ensure all equipment is in working order and report any issues.
- Conduct temperature checks for wine storage.
- Ensure all decanters are clean and well-maintained.
- Minimise losses through breakage, waste, theft, and incorrect orders.
- Perform monthly stock-takes of beverages.
- Promote guest satisfaction by delivering excellent service.
- Adhere strictly to the provisions and regulations of the Liquor Act (No. 59 of 2003) and other applicable regulations.
Requirements:
- Grade 12 certificate and a certificate from Cape Wine Academy or WSET Level 1.
- Preferably 1-2 years of experience as a wine tutor.
- In-depth knowledge of wines, including grape varieties, regions, harvest times, climates, soils, and the wine-making process.
- Passionate about wine and the hospitality industry.
- Strong product knowledge.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to maintain professional relationships with all departments.
- Comfortable dealing with distinguished clientele.
- Well-presented and enthusiastic.
- Flexibility and accountability in job duties.
